The Sierra de Atapuerca

Sierra de Atapuerca (Atapuerca Hills) is a Karstic formation located 15 Kilometers east from the city of Burgos in the region of Castilla y León, in northern Spain. Is a complex system with many limestones caves used in different ways during the Pleistocene epoch wich spans from one and half million year to 10.000 years ago.

But more modern settlements have been documented in early prehistory, that is to say during Neolithic and Bornze Age in Protohistoric and historic times.

Excavations carried out annually in the Atapuerca hills provide evidence of special interest human inhabitations. They are important not only for its antiquity, but for economic implications wich can be deduced from the study of this human communities remnants.

Information obtained in Atapuerca Sites are very important for the study of human evolution in Europe.
