The Atapuerca Hills: A Singular Place

The strategic location and a complex cave system were determining factors in the selection of this area as a home by the first hominid groups.

Sierra de Atapuerca is an area of gently rolling hills located in the eastern pat of the Province of Burgos. It is part of the so-called “Estrecho de Burgos” (Straight of Burgos), which lies between the Ebro and Duero River Basins and constitutes a natural corridor connecting the Iberian Mountain System and the Basque-Cantabrian Mountain Range.
